A team of young innovators from SMAIR Foundation and AI & Robotics Innovation Technologies recently took their skills beyond the classroom and onto the national stage at the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Nigeria 2026 in Abuja.
Held on 5 May 2026 , the national competition brought together talented young people passionate about robotics, artificial intelligence and using technology to solve real-world problems. This year's challenge placed a strong focus on agriculture and food security , encouraging participants to design, build and program robots capable of tackling practical challenges within the agricultural sector.
From Lagos to the National Stage
For our young innovators, the journey began long before competition day.
The students spent weeks learning, designing, testing and improving their robotic solutions. Behind every successful run were hours of preparation, teamwork, problem-solving and the determination to keep improving whenever something did not work as expected.
Then came the journey from Lagos to Abuja.
Ten students represented the SMAIR community on the national stage, carrying with them everything they had learned through hands-on robotics training and project-based education.
The experience gave the students an opportunity to compete, interact with other young innovators and see first-hand how technology can be applied to some of society's biggest challenges.
Building Technology for Real Problems
The Robotics for Good Youth Challenge is more than a competition.
Organized as part of the AI for Good initiative, the programme encourages students between the ages of 10 and 18 to develop practical AI and robotics solutions while strengthening important skills such as teamwork, creativity, programming and critical thinking.
For the 2025–2026 edition, participants explored how robotics could contribute to agriculture and food security.
This gave the students an opportunity to understand an important lesson: technology is not simply about building machines. It is about identifying problems and creating solutions that can make people's lives better.
A Proud Third-Place Finish
After the preparation, testing and competition rounds, the SMAIR team finished the journey with an impressive third-place achievement .
It was a proud moment for the students, their mentors, parents and everyone who supported them throughout the preparation process.
But beyond the position on the podium, the experience represented something even bigger.
Each student returned with greater confidence, stronger technical skills and the experience of competing alongside other young innovators from across Nigeria.
Raising the Next Generation of African Innovators
At AI & Robotics Innovation Technologies , in partnership with SMAIR Foundation , we believe young people should not only learn how technology works — they should have opportunities to build with it, experiment with it and use it to solve meaningful problems.
Experiences such as the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge show what becomes possible when young people are given the right tools, mentorship and environment to explore their ideas.
The achievement in Abuja is another milestone in our commitment to developing the next generation of African engineers, programmers, innovators and problem-solvers.
And for these young innovators, this is only the beginning.
